Which weight loss operation is right for me?

Weight-loss surgery is a big decision. That is why we have a team of experts to help you on your journey to health improvement. Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care offers the following weight-loss surgeries and support:

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Revisions
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Gastric Band Adjustments

How do you decide which procedure is right for you?

There is no research available that suggests one operation is better suited for a patient based on personality type, eating patterns, or current weight. The recommendation of Mosaic Life Care at St. Joseph - Bariatric Care is that patients become well informed on the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure and decide which one is the best option for them. The most critical factor in your success is commitment to eating healthy, exercising, attending support group sessions, and keeping follow-up appointments.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

A gastric bypass procedure often results in higher weight loss as well as better resolution of obesity–related medical problems for patients who choose this option. It does, however, involve dividing the stomach and small intestine which increases the complication rate.

The malabsorption component of the operation can lead to vitamin deficiencies and requires long term monitoring. Learn more about gastric bypass surgery.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Revisions

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is the newest approach to weight loss surgery. It involves removal of about 85 percent of the stomach. It carries a complication risk a little higher than gastric bypass.

The amount of weight lost with a sleeve gastrectomy is not as great as with gastric bypass, but much higher than gastric band.

It is the only weight-loss operation offered at Mosaic Life Care that is not reversible, and it can make heartburn symptoms worse.
