Loss of smell


When to make a doctor’s appointment

See a doctor if:

  • Lasts for more than a few days
  • Worsening loss of smell
  • Not associated with allergies or infection
  • New weakness on one side
  • Tremor

Self-care

Antihistamines, saline nasal drops or nasal steroid sprays available without a prescription might help if loss of smell is caused by allergies or illness.
