Tinnitus

When to make a doctor’s appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Develops after a cold or other upper respiratory infection and persists longer than a week
  • Symptoms are bothersome
  • Possibly developing hearing loss

Self-care

Distracting sounds such as a fan, low-volume radio static, or soft music may make tinnitus more tolerable. Relaxation, biofeedback, and exercise may also help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Onset is sudden, especially if only in one ear
